Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

A definition of a broken heart - intense emotional pain experienced when the actions or betrayal of another person deeply hurts someone.
Jesus said in Luke 4: 18-19, Jesus quotes Isaiah, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."
A person with a wounded spirit lives in inner misery and focuses regularly on his injuries or pain and cannot receive the cleansing. Usually, there is unforgiveness and self-pity in a wounded heart, and unforgiveness and self-pity are the glue that holds you to the pain of your past.
Have you met people who, no matter how hard they try to walk, seem to fall or one day have faith and the next not but have doubt and unbelief? That's because they have a broken heart and cannot stand. You can tell them to stand on the word and quote promises, but they cannot. That is because they have a broken heart!
Their pain and hurt never goes away for someone with a broken heart! Time will not bring complete healing to them. Whenever you remember the experience, you feel the hurt. Some people will block out their memory so they won't have to face feeling the hurt, but they are still there.
Often, as children, lack of validation, perfectionist parents, and never praise can break the heart to cause drivenness and fear of failure or letting someone down. The Lord knows all people need validation, value, and shown love. When lacking, a broken heart because of so much criticism. That person may develop allergies, addictions to cope, and other diseases.
If a child/adult goes through abuse from someone (parent/(ex)husband), then the heart can become damaged. Then, lies from the enemy attack their identity through accusation.

A person with a deep, broken heart struggles in many of the areas listed below:
They cannot understand the things of God. Don't think God loves you like He loves others.
Inability to Recognize God's Presence.
They cannot bring forth good things in their lives. They seem to have more things go wrong than good.
Not being blessed financially even when they give tithes. Not able to stand until your crop comes in (financially).
They have a hard time reading the word and meditating on the word.
Living in mental pain and trapped or preoccupied with the past. Dwelling on adverse events.
Will seem spiritually asleep and spiritually immature.
Struggles to understand teaching.
People in authority who hurt and do not love them have a trust problem.
They go by feelings and cannot go by faith.
They come across as negative people with chronic hostility, sarcasm, cynicism, and critical and judgmental of others.
They will be caught up in work instead of grace, meaning being performance-oriented to prove their worth.
Has a hard time receiving love from others or loving themselves.
Will have a history of seeing a psychologist, etc., and even problems with thoughts of suicide.
They will be negative about everything, unable to see anything positive, and will lack peace and joy—a history of depression and other mental disorders.
Will have more things go wrong in their lives.
They will not know their identity in Christ and know your promises in Him, especially during trials, and they will not hear the truth but cannot hold onto the truth.
Not being able to keep God's commandments will cause trouble with sin. Prone to adultery and pornography and want to feel love and feel better. Possibly other addictions to food and people, such as codependency!
Will become fearful.
Will have physical ailments that seem not to go away.
You will not be able to get rid of your anger and have fits of anger and rage when feeling rejected.
Will view himself or herself as the sufferer and want self-pity from others.
Will blame others by holding others responsible for the misery in their life.
A wounded spirit is like a big sore risen, waiting for someone to prick it with a sharp word. Out comes all the corruption of unforgiveness, resentment, retaliation, anger/wrath, hatred, violence, murder with the tongue, fear and rejection of others, self, and even God.
Other people respond by immediately striking back, trying to balance their hurt with anger and revenge, or protecting themselves from further hurt to allow time.
However, scar tissue (hardness of the heart) soon appears. As they enter into relationships, they are rejected for their hardness and receive more hurt. It could be years of hurt, then bitterness stuffed down.
A wounded heart that doesn't receive healing is an open door for evil spirits. Ephesians 4:26-27, I Peter 5:8, Genesis 4:4-7, Matthew 18:21-35.
There is hope! Jesus said we would do more wondrous works than he according to John 14: 12 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
Could you have a broken heart? Has anyone ever told you that you have a broken heart? Do you want your heart healed so that you can follow God? Are you suffering from diseases, anxiety, or stress? Driven with performance in everything you do, fearful of failure or letting others down? Have no boundaries, and everyone uses you up?
How about not trusting others and being afraid of vulnerability?
Luke 4:18 - "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,"
